The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul – Robert Wyland
If you are going to visit Whitstable and you’re an active type you might want to check out each of these businesses. My cousins kids have had a number of wonderful weekends out on the water in Whitstable. Some of the experiences are straight-forward hires, some of them are tuition based.
Whitstable Yacht Club
Originally called the Whitstable Yacht Racing Committee the WYC owes its initial roots to Fred Goldfinch, a wealthy local grocer and Alf Bates who had a Cycle Agency in Canterbury. To start off with, it was a loose association of local yachtsmen who enjoyed sailing together and it was not until 1904 that they decided to form a club, called the Kent Yacht Club, and acquire premises. In 1906 the name was changed again to the current Whitstable Yacht Club. The Club took on its premises at Sea Wall soon after leasing what has been the Victoria Inn. In 1912, Dr Charles Etheridge, a local GP, was elected Commodore and he remained so for 40 years making him the longest serving Commodore of any Yacht Club in the UK ever!
Over time the club has produced its share of world class sailors such as Slotty Dawes who the clubs committee boat is named after. There is a growing cadet scene at Whitstable Yacht club so if you have children over the age of 8 maybe take them down for a taster day as the facilities are great. The club has its own boats as well as windsurf boards too!
The Club’s commitment to training young sailors has recently been recognised by the Royal Yachting Association and it is the only one in the South East to be both a RYA Volvo Champion Club and a Team 15 Windsurfing Club.
